There has been a survey by an institute conducted on cyber attacks. This survey found that more than 85% of the businesses in the United States had at least one experienced security breach in the past year. Half of those who had been hit said that the attacks have been more frequent and more than three-quarters of those who have been hit said that the attacks now are stronger and harder to restrict.
Given these results, what does that say about the security that we uphold? Is information security a thing of the past or has it been something that never existed? Does the ms in information security that we hold have a firm protection around it even with having someone who is a master in information security?
With all the applications and technologies that we hold, from cell phones to smartphones, from tablets to notebooks, we are slowly unable to take hold of the information that we try to secure. Adding to that, given our state and in how vast and advanced the internet has become, we can never be sure nowadays.
A chief research officer in a security research company named NSS Labs concluded that security breaches are unavoidable and inevitable no matter how strong your security system is. He added that whatever defense you put around your network, the firewalls and IPSes can never stop the hackers if they totally pursued in entering your network.
As a result, he recommended that one should never pursue having a perfect barrier as a security system because that is impossible. Instead, one should focus and rely on the active monitoring of the system. Keep track of anomalies, watch for discrepancies and look out for unusual changes in order to quickly spot and sense that you’re under attack. The chief research officer went on and said that it is all about lessening the risks as much as possible and accepting that you’re always at risk but you can do something to minimize it.
Edward Hamilton said that the most common and the most usual security risk is on the employees of a company. He stated that, based on his experience being head personnel of Information Security and Assurance, the mistakes of employees may be the reason why you experience a security breach. Here are practical examples that usually occur: an employee has accidentally left a phone or a laptop on a train with access on your system or an employee had mistakenly e-mailed documents that have private information to his friends or peers.
Since people are prone to mistakes and people are also prone to take advantage of the mistakes done by people, in some way it is safe to say that security breaches are unavoidable. What you can do to go against that is to have the right technology and the right people who have right knowledge due to having a master in information security in order to lessen the adverse effect security breaches have on your system.
In that sense, information security if defined as a security that protects your system wholly then you can say that information security is a myth. But, if you define information security as imperfect and only a security that serves to protect your system and acknowledges that it must continually improve in order to protect your system better, then no, information security is not a myth.
In that sense, there is an alternative to safeguard your system more against breaches and potential hacks. A person who is a master in information security is a perfect addition to your company. Also, a master degree in information security greatly helps a company due to the experience and training one has in information security.
