Sacred to Lord Shiva, rudraksha is said to have sprung from the
Almighty Rudra's (Lord Shiva's) aksh (tears) as established by the
shastras. The Shiv Purana has it that the meditating Shiva closed his
eyes to let fall these drops which emerged as a tree whose fruit the
Akhrot is shelled to yield the seed which is the panacea for mental
peace, if worn as a pendant and around the arm, next to the skin.
Sages have also been known to have made use of it to enhance their
powers of concentration and attain higher levels of consciousness and
spiritual advancement. The japa of Om Nama Shivaya recited 108 times
on the string of rudraksha beads is said to symbolise the nine planets
and 12 sub-planets which encompass the universe, to evoke cosmic
powers if the lord's name is uttered before sunrise and at bedtime,
such a necklace is also considered ideal, significant numerically.
In the stanzas of chapter 25 of the Shiva Purana are enshrined the
wisdom of ancient Indian thinkers, as elaborated by P. K. Srivastava
who possibly runs the only genuine rudraksha centre in India, which
also specialises in the rudraksha therapy.
Classified according to the mukhi or edges on the bead ranging from
one to 14 in number, though in rare instances cuts upto 21 are known
to exist, their colours range from white, red, brown to black. The one
cut rudraksha is considered a part of Lord Shiva and hence ideal for
the worship of the Lord, it is also believed to be the most powerful,
predisposing one towards spirituality, to put one on the path of
salvation. The second form having two cuts are for those who seek
redemption from the sins of cow slaughter. Also potent is a twin bead
known as Gowri-Shankar. The three-edged-one is a form representing
Agni; Four-Symbolising the powers of Brahma; five - Kala agni, a form
of Lord Shiva or Neelkantha; Six-significant to Kartikeya, the son of
Shiva; Seven- activating forces which remove poverty; Eight owes
obeisance to Vasumurthi, a form of Bhairav and Kapil muni resembling
Durga Parmeswari, to invoke those powers of washing away of crores of
sins through repentance, to cleanse the soul, if it is worn around the
left arm.
The 10-edged rudraksha is a symbol of Vishnu and the planets, to bring
calmness of mind, protection from snakes and a means to ward off evil
spirits.; 11 signifies the Ahwamedna yagna or horse sacrifice and the
donations made during the lunar rclipse; 12-Surya which washes the
sins of those who committed homicide or thefts of valuables, also to
invoke protection from fire, thieves and poverty; 13 symbolises the
face of the powerful Lord Indra who fulfils every wish and favours
those dealing in metals, chemicals etc., and forgiveness for sins; 14
represents Hanuman who takes care of all aspects of life-Physical,
material, emotional and spiritual. The rudraksha, according to one
belief, insulates one against a strike by lightning. Also beneficial
for general debility and dizziness are soaking overnight of seven,
eight or nine edged rudraksha in a glass of water to be consumed on an
empty stomach the next morning-----a remedy also effective for
excessive perspiration. A general health preservative is had from
indigestion of the ground rudraksha in milk or water. The only
precautions for wearing the rudraksha include abstinence of
non-vegetarian food and sex, non-participation in funeral processions
or visits to crematoria and during the menstrual period.
Are these Vedic prescriptions are applicable to people in modern-day
society? Mr. Srivastava, engaged in the profession for 20 years now
and hailing from a family who has been in it for three generations,
believes they are. It is according to his experience and intuition
that he has brought benefits to 90% of those seeking his help for
nervousness, lack of confidence and concentration, even getting a few
drug addicts to resort to medical therapy. His clients hail from
different faiths-----Hindus, Catholic, Parsees. A leading
cardiologists in Bombay also vouches for the rudrakshas powers of
controlling blood pressure. The rudraksha must also be genuine, as
obtained from Nepal, Srilanka, Malaysia and Indonesia, and undamaged,
to ensure its potency. In India the edges are artificially cut.
It takes a minimum of 30 to 45 days for the rudraksha to react with
body cells to discount negative thinking, pessimism, depression and to
experience a genuine feeling of well-being and a spirit of awakening.
It is worn initially after it is washed in milk, preferably cow's
milk, or ganga jal or plain water after one's morning bath, preferably
on a Monday. Accompanying their being worn for the first time are
mantras, cut-wise: For a single cut it is:

Two---Om Ksheem Hreem Kshraum Breem Om.
